UKWIR’s research is divided into seven mission-based themes which target resources at the projects that deliver the greatest value to society and the environment.
Our themes are closely aligned with Spring’s UK 2050 Water Innovation Strategy, which collectively reported on the challenges faced by all 18 UK water utilities and their key stakeholders. Creating a national strategy with common research goals supports greater consistency across the water sector and helps speed up transformational change through innovation. The UKWIR themes are also linked back to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to reflect the global requirement for water research.
In 2020, all 18 UK water and wastewater companies published this strategy for future innovation requirements. This was the first time the sector had outlined its vision collectively, to help deliver transformative research and innovation across the sector. UKWIR’s Research Strategy was created in alignment with this vital piece of work.
UKWIR will enable research which helps improve the accessibility and affordability of water services for all, and delivers transformational customer service.
UKWIR will enable research to ensure that the quality and quantity of water required to protect customers’ health is maintained, across a whole range of possible scenarios.
UKWIR will enable research that protects and enhances the natural environment and its ecosystems, supporting the safe and sustainable removal and treatment of wastewater.
UKWIR will enable research that prepares critical operations, systems and assets to be resilient to future challenges and unknowns.
UKWIR will enable research which limits carbon emissions, to help the water sector play its part in keeping the global temperature rise under 1.5°C
UKWIR will enable research which maximises recovery of useful resources and minimises waste, using the principles of a circular economy.
UKWIR will enable research which improves our understanding of how to best develop the culture, skills and partnerships to prepare for future change.
