WFD Requirements for Lakes, Transitional and Coastal Waters: Source Apportionment for Nutrients and Priority Chemicals
The key objective of this project was to expand the existing SAGIS river tool for metals, organic compounds and nutrients to assess source apportionment in lakes, transitional and coastal waters (SAGIS-LaTraC) from all major point and diffuse sources, using available national datasets. Additional export load databases were developed for export of chemicals associated with lakes, transitional and coastal water bodies including inputs from wildfowl, anglers (i.e. ground bait) and boats (i.e. biocides). A simple lake model was developed within the SAGIS framework to estimate chemical input loads from rivers, local catchments and within lake sources and to simulate within lake concentrations. Input loads are also calculated for chemical loads to estuaries and coastal water. The SAGIS databases and visualisation tools were modified to include updated source apportionment information for lakes, transitional waters and coastal water bodies to support river basin planning and wider environmental management.
The main report presents the outline methodologies used for the SAGIS-LaTraC tool and an example from the upgraded tool with Appendix A providing a user guide for the SAGIS-LaTraC tool. The methodologies in the main report are expanded in Appendix B to give further information on the methods used to generate input loads for the model and simulate chemical concentrations and loads. The validation report, Appendix C, presents a comparison of model outputs with observed data and outputs from the QUEST estuary model.
