Reassessing the Risk and Control of Zebra Mussels in the UK Water Industry
This report is the second of three final reports from the UKWIR graduate sandpit project. It was selected after discussion of 15 project proposals at a meeting in summer 2015.
It explores the geographical range and seriousness of the issues presented to UKWIR member companies by the invasive species zebra and Quagga mussels. It goes on to survey currently used and potential preventative and remedial measures and estimate the costs involved.
Although currently widespread in only in the south and east of England there are indications that the mussels are extending their range. It is estimated that the control measures are currently costing the UK water industry around £5million.
This work is expected to provide detailed information on Zebra and Quagga mussels to the current more general UKWIR project (ref no) on invasive non-native species (INNS).
